Digitalisation as a tool in the work of agricultural producers
Raisio has a strong vision of contributing to the technological development of agriculture. In preparation for a larger digitalisation project, Raisio carried out two separate projects in which Leonidas played an important role.
“Our goal is to facilitate the everyday routines of agricultural producers and support them by offering digital services,” describes CIO Sami Halinen from Raisio. “The coding business is built on trust. When applications are built from the ground up, the supplier and customer must have a relationship of trust. With Leonidas, that trust was built quickly, and our cooperation has been easy and effortless.”
A mobile application for silo accounting
The first project was a mobile application for silo accounting. Agricultural producers record the information on their grain stock on the silo wall with chalk, on a pack of cigarettes with a pen or into a spreadsheet from memory once they make it to the house from the silo. Raisio wanted to provide farmers with the opportunity for silo accounting on a mobile phone, which can be found in everyone’s pocket.
“We wanted a prototype of the application quickly, and Leonidas delivered one to us precisely on schedule. The silo accounting application has now been in use for a few years, and we are gathering farmers’ experiences in using it. In the future, the prototype’s content will be refined for Raisio’s other digitalisation projects, and the user experiences we have gained will provide valuable information for these projects.”
The farmer enters the status of his or her grain silo into the application. The application then calculates the total amount of grain in kilos, checks the price of the grain on the Raisioagro website and shows the market value of the stock in the silo in euros. Farmers have found the mobile application to be useful, as it is a handy stock management software.
A mobile application for cattle feeding plans
The most recent fruit of the cooperation between Raisio and Leonidas is the Ruoksu mobile application for cattle feeding plans, intended for dairy farmers. Raisioagro plans what animals should eat in order to produce as much high-quality milk as possible and stay healthy. When feeding dozens of cows, the feed is not dispensed with a measuring cup – it is dispensed by the tractor bucket. The dairy farmer may be out of an ingredient, and changing certain ingredients is immediately noticeable in the milk’s quality and amount as well as the cows’ well-being.
“We supply farmers with individual cattle feeding plans. We wanted to make the recipes accessible by mobile phone so that farmers could always carry them with them in the barn. The iterative nature of the mobile recipe plays a key role: if the recipe requires 52 kilos of a certain ingredient, but the farmer only has 30 kilos, the application proportions the recipe based on this amount, keeping the proportions of ingredients in accordance with the plan. Thanks to the Ruoksu application, we are able to analyse the changes in the milk output better and advise producers better with regard to feeding their animals. This results in the milk producer gaining more profit from cows that produce a large amount of high-quality milk.”
A group of milk producers have been testing the Ruoksu application, and according to them the proportioning function is a welcome tool in the everyday work in the barn. The amount of silage may be off by hundreds of kilos, which is where the proportioning calculator is of great assistance. If a part of the batch is left uneaten or the cows eat everything, the application changes the size of the next batch.
Leonidas was in charge of designing and implementing the Ruoksu application. “Leonidas has a great and agile team, whose members have the ability to make a variety of applications. Such detailed applications can rarely be implemented with the same model. The people at Leonidas not only possess expertise in different technologies but are also able to communicate with the other project actors. In Raisio’s case, there are several of them. I can recommend Leonidas’s services without reservation,” says Sami Halinen.
