“The people at Leonidas have a fearless attitude. In changing environments, they are able to easily adjust to the team and catch up with the team’s pace at running speed.”

Recommendable risky business
Owned by OP, Checkout Finland Oy is a company specialising in payment services, whose range of services includes a variety of tools for implementing and controlling online payments. Checkout’s cloud-based software is developed by the company’s own team, which was complemented by software developers from Leonidas in April 2016.
“Checkout is a company working in the traditional financial sector. It follows certain operating models that have been set in stone over the years. In addition to additional labour, we also needed a new attitude and a new way to do things. Leonidas’s employees brought with them agile development methods and a fresh approach to the work. The people at Leonidas have a fearless attitude. In changing environments, they are able to easily adjust to the team and catch up with the team’s pace at running speed,” describes CTO Mika Turunen from Checkout.
Folks from a thin management layer
“Changing the way we do things has brought new spirit to the entire team. One thing I like about the people from Leonidas is their professional style of doing things: they talk about everything honestly and conflicts only occur between things, never between people. I do my best not to put out the fire that the guys have for their work,” Mika Turunen emphasises.
Key words in leading a self-guided team include trust and listening. “I act as the driver of the team, turning the steering wheel wherever the team tells me to, provided that they have a good reason. The people from Leonidas are used to a thin management layer and leaders who support the decisions made by developers. My goal is to refrain from making any decisions on behalf of the team that would affect their everyday lives. Mistakes will always be made, but no one will be thrown into the fire for making them. This operating model makes people strive forwards and try to do things better the next time around.”
Leonidas’s employees an important part of the Checkout team
All Checkout’s developers have the responsibility to work as equals. The five employees from Leonidas who are part of the team are treated like the company’s own employees, and they participate in Checkout’s evening gatherings, for example.
However, employee leasing has its own risks. When an employee of Leonidas wants to change jobs, it also affects the employer’s plans.
“One person from Leonidas left, and for me it was the moment I lost my right hand. I had learned to trust their professional skill and having them there to challenge me – sometimes our opinions even clashed strongly. I was upset about losing someone I trusted, but new talented people have quickly taken their place,” says Mika Turunen.
The developer team’s workload must be lightened still, and there will continue to be a need for additional resources in the future.
“I can definitely recommend Leonidas’s software development services! Leonidas has always found us someone who is the right fit for us, with strong expertise in the desired field, the ability to adapt to the requirements while still being firm in their own opinions. Professional skills include recognising your own skills and limits, understanding technologies, having the ability to learn new – and what is also important – old technologies. Taking flight together has been easy because these basics have always been covered. Agreeing upon details is easy with Harri, the service is quick, and they never try to force anything when we meet,” praises Turunen.
